… having my eyes fixed on all your commandments. I will praise you with an upright heart, when I learn your righteous ordinances. – Psalm 119:6-7
The psalms reflect a time in faith history when adherence to doctrine and dogma was the measure of righteousness. But as we know, doctrines are tied to the time and place they were written for. They need to be understood in their context and not treated as “written in stone.”
In order to “praise God with an upright heart” we need to be able to adapt – or even discard – “commandments” that no longer reflect our living relationship with the living Theos
