Furthermore, the former priests were many in number, because they were prevented by death from continuing in office; but he holds his priesthood permanently, because he continues for ever – Hebrews 7:23-24
The writer of Hebrews was making an analogy that would have made perfect sense to his audience. They would have understood the context of the priesthood just as we do the organization of our own churches or governments.
We need a different metaphor today, and it’s a simple one – the Message of the Christ isn’t dependent on intermediaries. It isn’t subject to the agendas of individuals. It’s eternal, and unchanging – love one another as I have loved you.
