to Hannah he gave a double portion, because he loved her, though the LORD had closed her womb. Her rival used to provoke her severely, to irritate her, because the LORD had closed her womb. So it went on year after year- 1 Samuel 1:5-7
Hannah could have been happy without the birth of Samuel. Her husband tried to convince her that he was perfectly happy without having children with her. But she wasn’t. She let cultural pressure, and a bullying family member, make her miserable.
How often do we ignore the ones closest to us, who encourage us, and care for us just as we are, and listen to the empty taunts of a culture fixated on stereotypes of “success” or “beauty”?
It doesn’t need to be that way. But then…. where would Samuel be?
