But I was like a gentle lamb led to the slaughter. And I did not know it was against me that they devised schemes, saying, ‘Let us destroy the tree with its fruit, let us cut him off from the land of the living, so that his name will no longer be remembered!’ But you, O LORD of hosts, who judge righteously, who try the heart and the mind, let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my cause. Jeremiah 11:19-20
Okay, Jeremiah was having a bad day. The old gang from the ‘hood didn’t like what he had to say and they were out to get him. But does that really justify his request that God not only whack them, but that God do it in such a way that Jeremiah can watch??
It’s a common theme in the Old Testament. Those called to deliver a message for God weren’t always thrilled with the assignment. And who could blame them? They were always going on about how people had to turn away from idol worship and stop being fixated on the material.
How popular would that message be today, when we’re told that the only way to “get the economy going” is to “spend, spend, spend”?
Who has the courage to speak that message today? Who wants to interview for the position of modern prophet?
